Anxiety and depression are becoming increasingly recognized in children and adolescents, though these conditions may sometimes be difficult to identify. Children with anxiety may experience excessive worry or fear, often about events or situations that seem harmless to others, such as school performance, social interactions or separating from parents. Physical symptoms like stomach aches, headaches or trouble sleeping can also occur. Depression in children, on the other hand, may present as persistent sadness, irritability or a loss of interest in activities they once enjoyed. They may also experience changes in appetite or sleep patterns, fatigue, difficulty concentrating or thoughts of self-harm. It's important to note that children may not always express their feelings verbally and can instead act out in ways such as becoming withdrawn or disruptive. Children and adolescents may not always know how to describe what they are feeling or may try to avoid talking about it with others.
Treatment of anxiety and depression in children typically involves a combination of therapy and, in some cases, medication. Family therapy and support are often beneficial, as parents can learn how to provide a supportive environment and develop effective communication strategies. In more severe cases, our pediatricians may prescribe medications such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) to help regulate mood and anxiety symptoms. Early intervention and a comprehensive treatment plan are key to helping children manage anxiety and depression, promoting emotional well-being and healthy development.
